... Cry out for Discernment ... -- Proverbs 2:3a (NKJV)
... Cry out for Discernment ... -- Proverbs 2:3a (NKJV)
Proverbs 10:6; 11:10-11, 30; 12:12; 14:22; 15:6; 16:20; 28:1; 29:7, 27
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The wicked covet the catch of evil men, but the root of the righteous yields fruit. The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. The righteous considers the cause of the poor, but the wicked does not understand such knowledge.
When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is jubilation. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but in the revenue of the wicked is trouble.
Do they not go astray who devise evil? But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good.
An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked. He who heeds the word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.
Proverbs 10:6; 11:10-11, 30; 12:12; 14:22; 15:6; 16:20; 28:1; 29:7, 27
Matthew 5:13-16; 7:24-25; 13:23
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Matthew 5:13-16; 7:24-25; 13:23
Proverbs 11:16; 12:4; 14:1; 15:2
A gracious woman retains honor, but ruthless men retain riches.
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands.
Proverbs 11:16; 12:4; 14:1; 15:2
Ecclesiastes 9:7-8; 11:9-10
Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works. Let your garments always be white, and let your head lack no oil.
Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for childhood and youth are vanity.
Ecclesiastes 9:7-8; 11:9-10
Proverbs 25:25; 27:2; 28:4; 31:28 & Ephesians 5:19-20
As cold water to a weary soul, so is good news from a far country.
Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them.
Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips ... speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 25:25; 27:2; 28:4; 31:28 & Ephesians 5:19-20
Proverbs 13:1, 8, 14, 18; 15:5, 10, 12, 31-32; 16:22; 17:10; 19:25; 21:11; 22:10, 15; 23:13-14; 24:11, 25; 25:12; 26:3, 5
A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him. Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell.
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor does not hear rebuke. Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored.
Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, and he who hates correction will die. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the fool’s back. A scoffer does not love one who corrects him, nor will he go to the wise. Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; yes, strife and reproach will cease. When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; but when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise. He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, but he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. Rebuke is more effective for a wise man than a hundred blows on a fool. Strike a scoffer, and the simple will become wary; rebuke one who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it. But the correction of fools is folly. But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, and a good blessing will come upon them. Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.
Proverbs 13:1, 8, 14, 18; 15:5, 10, 12, 31-32; 16:22; 17:10; 19:25; 21:11; 22:10, 15; 23:13-14; 24:11, 25; 25:12; 26:3, 5
Proverbs 5:9, 12-14, 23; 6:23; 9:9; 10:17; 11:14; 12:15, 17; 13:10; 15:2, 5, 7, 22, 32-33; 16:20-21, 23; 18:15; 19:20, 27; 20:5, 15, 18; 21:11
He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, but he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility. He who heeds the word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he. The wise in heart will be called prudent, and sweetness of the lips increases learning.
Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one; and say: “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised correction! I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me! I was on the verge of total ruin, in the midst of the assembly and congregation.” He shall die for lack of instruction, and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; but when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, but he who refuses correction goes astray. The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. There is gold and a multitude of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Plans are established by counsel; by wise counsel wage war. The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise. By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom. Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established. Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.
He who speaks truth declares righteousness, but a false witness, deceit. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, but the heart of the fool does not do so.
Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent.
Proverbs 5:9, 12-14, 23; 6:23; 9:9; 10:17; 11:14; 12:15, 17; 13:10; 15:2, 5, 7, 22, 32-33; 16:20-21, 23; 18:15; 19:20, 27; 20:5, 15, 18; 21:11
Psalms 31:23; 97:10 & Proverbs 13:24; 15:17; 17:9; 25:21-22 & Matthew 5:43-47
Oh, love the LORD, all you His saints! For the Lord preserves the faithful, and fully repays the proud person. You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted calf with hatred.
He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends.
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you.
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
Psalms 31:23; 97:10 & Proverbs 13:24; 15:17; 17:9; 25:21-22 & Matthew 5:43-47
Proverbs 10:28; 12:20, 25; 13:9, 19; 14:21; 15:13, 15, 20, 30
The hope of the righteous will be gladness, but the expectation of the wicked will perish. The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but counselors of peace have joy. A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad. A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. All the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast. The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy.
A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother. He who despises his neighbor sins; but he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.
Proverbs 10:28; 12:20, 25; 13:9, 19; 14:21; 15:13, 15, 20, 30
Proverbs 3:21, 23-26, 30; 10:9; 11:12-15; 12:20; 14:30; 15:18; 16:7; 17:1, 14; 18:18; 20:2; 22:10; 29:8, 17 & Isaiah 26:3-4, 12
My son, let them not depart from your eyes — Keep sound wisdom and discretion; then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.
Correct your son, and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your soul.
Do not strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm. The beginning of strife is like releasing water; therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts. Casting lots causes contentions to cease, and keeps the mighty apart. Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; yes, strife and reproach will cease. A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger allays contention. When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known. He who is surety for a stranger will suffer, but one who hates being surety is secure. He who is devoid of wisdom despises his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his peace. Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.
Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but counselors of peace have joy. Scoffers set a city aflame, but wise men turn away wrath.
You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.
Proverbs 3:21, 23-26, 30; 10:9; 11:12-15; 12:20; 14:30; 15:18; 16:7; 17:1, 14; 18:18; 20:2; 22:10; 29:8, 17 & Isaiah 26:3-4, 12
Psalms 34:19, 22; 62:1, 5; 119:102, 111-112; 123:1-2
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.
Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.
I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. Your testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes forever, to the very end.
Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us.
Psalms 34:19, 22; 62:1, 5; 119:102, 111-112; 123:1-2
Psalms 37:16, 19; 65:4 & Proverbs 13:7; 15:16; 16:8
A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
Blessed is the man You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple.
There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; and one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.
Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble. Better is a little with righteousness, than vast revenues without justice.
Psalms 37:16, 19; 65:4 & Proverbs 13:7; 15:16; 16:8
Proverbs 11:17; 17:9; 19:11, 22; 20:28; 21:21; 25:21-22
Mercy and truth preserve the king, and by lovingkindness he upholds his throne. He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.
The merciful man does good for his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh. What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar.
He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends. The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you.
Proverbs 11:17; 17:9; 19:11, 22; 20:28; 21:21; 25:21-22
Proverbs 22:11; 25:4-5; 28:6, 10, 18; 29:10 & Hosea 10:12
He who loves purity of heart and has grace on his lips, the king will be his friend. Take away the dross from silver, and it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness.
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, he himself will fall into his own pit; but the blameless will inherit good. Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall. The bloodthirsty hate the blameless, but the upright seek his well-being.
Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till He comes and rains righteousness on you.
Proverbs 22:11; 25:4-5; 28:6, 10, 18; 29:10 & Hosea 10:12
Proverbs 17:23; 18:5, 17-18; 19:28-29
A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the back to pervert the ways of justice. It is not good to show partiality to the wicked, or to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
The first one to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbor comes and examines him. A disreputable witness scorns justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
Casting lots causes contentions to cease, and keeps the mighty apart.
Judgments are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
Proverbs 17:23; 18:5, 17-18; 19:28-29
Proverbs 23:17; 27:8; 28:4-5, 18, 20; 29:18, 27 & Isaiah 26:9 & Jeremiah 15:17 & Ezekiel 9:4
Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day.
Like a bird that wanders from its nest is a man who wanders from his place. Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them. Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.
Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall. An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked. A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all.
With my soul I have desired You in the night, yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early; for when Your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone because of Your hand, for You have filled me with indignation ... and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”
Proverbs 23:17; 27:8; 28:4-5, 18, 20; 29:18, 27 & Isaiah 26:9 & Jeremiah 15:17 & Ezekiel 9:4
Psalms 15:1-2; 51:6 & Proverbs 12:17, 19, 22
Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.
He who speaks truth declares righteousness, but a false witness, deceit. The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Psalms 15:1-2; 51:6 & Proverbs 12:17, 19, 22
Psalms 88:6-9, 14, 16; 90:7-9, 11; 118:18; 119:67, 71, 75 & Proverbs 3:11-12; 15:10; 20:30
You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the depths. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah You have put away my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an abomination to them; I am shut up, and I cannot get out; my eye wastes away because of affliction. Lord, I have called daily upon You; I have stretched out my hands to You. Lord, why do You cast off my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me? Your fierce wrath has gone over me; Your terrors have cut me off.
For we have been consumed by Your anger, and by Your wrath we are terrified. You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; we finish our years like a sigh. Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
The Lord has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death.
Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word. It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right, and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.
Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, and he who hates correction will die. Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, as do stripes the inner depths of the heart.
Psalms 88:6-9, 14, 16; 90:7-9, 11; 118:18; 119:67, 71, 75 & Proverbs 3:11-12; 15:10; 20:30
Job 30:1, 9-15 & Psalm 34:19; 120:1-2; 129:2-4; 142:5-7; 143:3-4
But now they mock at me, men younger than I, whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock. And now I am their taunting song; yes, I am their byword. They abhor me, they keep far from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. Because He has loosed my bowstring and afflicted me, they have cast off restraint before me. At my right hand the rabble arises; they push away my feet, and they raise against me their ways of destruction. They break up my path, they promote my calamity; they have no helper. They come as broad breakers; under the ruinous storm they roll along. Terrors are turned upon me; they pursue my honor as the wind, and my prosperity has passed like a cloud.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth; yet they have not prevailed against me. The plowers plowed on my back; they made their furrows long. The Lord is righteous; He has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked.
In my distress I cried to the Lord, and He heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me dwell in darkness, like those who have long been dead. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is distressed.
I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Your name; the righteous shall surround me, for You shall deal bountifully with me.
Job 30:1, 9-15 & Psalm 34:19; 120:1-2; 129:2-4; 142:5-7; 143:3-4
Proverbs 10:2-3; 11:21; 12:6, 13, 21; 13:6; 18:10; 21:18; 24:5-6, 16; 27:12; 28:18, 26; 29:25 & Isaiah 55:7; 61:10
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death. The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish, but He casts away the desire of the wicked. Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; but the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.
No grave trouble will overtake the righteous, but the wicked shall be filled with evil. Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the unfaithful for the upright. For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity. Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall.
The words of the wicked are, “Lie in wait for blood,” but the mouth of the upright will deliver them. The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will come through trouble.
A wise man is strong, yes, a man of knowledge increases strength; for by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety. A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; the simple pass on and are punished. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Proverbs 10:2-3; 11:21; 12:6, 13, 21; 13:6; 18:10; 21:18; 24:5-6, 16; 27:12; 28:18, 26; 29:25 & Isaiah 55:7; 61:10
Proverbs 19:8, 16, 23; 20:7; 21:21; 23:17-18; 24:13-15, 25; 25:21-22; 28:16, 25; 29:6, 16
He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is careless of his ways will die.
The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction; he will not be visited with evil. Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day; for surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.
He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.
The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.
My son, eat honey because it is good, and the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste; so shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul; if you have found it, there is a prospect, and your hope will not be cut off. Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; do not plunder his resting place.
But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, and a good blessing will come upon them.
A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor, but he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.
He who is of a proud heart stirs up strife, but he who trusts in the Lord will be prospered.
By transgression an evil man is snared, but the righteous sings and rejoices. When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases; but the righteous will see their fall.
Proverbs 19:8, 16, 23; 20:7; 21:21; 23:17-18; 24:13-15, 25; 25:21-22; 28:16, 25; 29:6, 16
